Welcome to the 11 AP Summer Reading Blog
This summer you will interact with your fellow 11 AP students by participating in a blog on the summer reading titles. The following list contains the three required titles for you to read this summer. The selections may be read in any order; however, we would like for you to follow the suggested deadline by which your initial resonse and comments are posted. Post your first selection by the week of July 13th, your second selection by the week of August 3rd, and your last selection by the week of August 31st.
The Awakening by Kate Chopin
Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
During the first week of school in the fall, you will be responding to three timed writing prompts, one for each text. These blogs will help facilitate your understanding and analysis of the literature. AP Language and Composition is a course that requires students to analyze the language devices (tone, diction, imagery, syntax, etc.) that the author uses in order to convey his/her purpose (message/meaning/theme).
Your first grade of the marking period will be based upon your participation in this online dialogue. The AP teachers will be monitoring the discussions throughout the summer, in order to help guide your thinking as needed. Please note that the quality of your response is what is being assessed not the length of each response/commentary.
If you have any questions or concerns, please visit the websites of or email Mrs. Brandt at [email protected] or Mrs. Foley at [email protected].
BLOG Initial Response Requirements
For each book you read, you must make an initial repsonse entry based on some rhetorical aspect of the work. You may consider, but are not limited to, the following suggestions:
1. Analyze/discuss the purpose (message, meaning, theme) of the book/play?
2. What language devices (tone, diction, imagery, syntax, etc.) does the author use in order to convey his/her purpose?
3. Choose a particular section (two sequential pages) from the novel/play to analyze. What is the author's purpose in this passage? How does he/she convey that purpose through the language of the passage?
4. How do the characters, conflict, and/or setting contribute to the overall message/meaning of the novel/play?
BLOG Commentary
For EACH book title, you are to comment on TWO different student responses, assessing the writer's analysis of the book. You will have a total of six commentaries minimum (2 per title).
